HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam has successfully piloted a new network authentication solution that removes the need for traditional one-time passwords (OTP), marking a notable advance in strengthening cybersecurity while improving user experience across digital services.

Viettel Solutions, a subsidiary of the Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel), announced it has partnered with US-based technology firm Shush Inc to test a Network Authentication model designed to replace SMS-based OTP verification.

As cyber threats, identity fraud and account takeovers become increasingly sophisticated, the new solution is expected to offer a safer and more seamless alternative to conventional authentication methods.

Instead of sending OTP codes via text messages, the system verifies users directly through the mobile network. This approach reduces fraud risks, enhances security and simplifies the login process for users. It also aligns with Việt Nam’s broader push to develop digital identity systems and expand its fintech ecosystem.

At the centre of the pilot project is Shush’s Sherlock platform, which serves as a core logic engine integrating and transforming APIs, the digital bridges that enable technology systems to connect and authenticate securely. Notably, the platform operates without requiring changes to existing telecom network infrastructure.

During the trial, Viettel and Shush deployed and integrated the platform into Viettel’s Open Gateway, a centralised system providing connectivity and API services to partners and enterprises.

The testing process focused on assessing the reliability of IP addresses assigned by the mobile network. By leveraging this trusted network data, the solution enables advanced mobile authentication and fraud prevention capabilities, paving the way for the eventual replacement of traditional OTP messages.

According to Viettel, the system offers several advantages, including reduced reliance on SMS-based OTPs, improved user convenience and more secure subscriber verification. These features are expected to help digital service providers better protect customers from scams and unauthorised access.

Following the successful pilot, Viettel plans to commercialise network authentication services across multiple sectors, including social media platforms, financial services, health technology and mobile application security.

The move reflects the company’s broader strategy to strengthen digital trust and build safer, more resilient infrastructure to support Việt Nam’s fast-growing digital economy. — VNS
