The main drivers lifting the VN-Index included Vinhomes (VHM), which was reported up to the ceiling, along with Vingroup (VIC), Sacombank (STB), LPBank (LPB), HDBank (HDB), Masan Group (MSN), Vinpearl (VPL) and Vietinbank (CTG).
HÀ NỘI — Indices closed higher on Thursday, with the VN-Index surging to a new all-time high.
From the start of the session, the market benchmark moved higher as investor sentiment appeared to improve after a period of volatile consolidation.
However, capital flows remained selective rather than broad-based, with capital concentrated in certain stock groups supported by their individual growth stories instead of spreading evenly across the market.
At the close, the VN-Index, representing the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, jumped 17.81 points, or 0.9 per cent, to finish at 1,909.1 points.
With that move, the benchmark surpassed the previous peak established in mid-January, raising expectations of a new upward trend if capital flows are maintained.
Liquidity on the southern bourse soared to more than VNĐ30 trillion (US$1.1 billion), equivalent to a trading volume of 961 million shares.
Despite the strong breakout in the VN-Index, overall market breadth remained negative, with 191 stocks declining while 119 gained.
A similar pattern was reflected in the VN30 basket, where market differentiation remained sharp, with 13 stocks rising, four unchanged, and 13 declining. Even so, the VN30-Index still rose by nearly 25.7 points, surpassing the 2,079 level, supported by gains in heavyweight stocks.
The main stocks driving the VN-Index higjher included VHM, which hit the daily ceiling price, along with VIC, STB, LPB, HDB, MSN, VPL and CTG. These stocks rose between 0.7 per cent and 3.6 per cent.
On the other hand, selling pressure was concentrated in energy stocks and certain banking and consumer-related shares.
GAS was the biggest negative contributor, falling 4 per cent and wiping nearly 1.6 points off the VN-Index. It was followed by BSR, down 4.5 per cent, VCB, which fell 0.3 per cent, PLX, down 3.3 per cent, SAB, which lost 2.4 per cent, and NVL, down 3.5 per cent.
On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index edged down 0.7 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 247.76 points.
