HCM CITY — AkzoNobel, a leading global paints and coatings manufacturer, has announced that its production plant in former Bình Dương Province (now HCM City) has achieved LEED Gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council.

This marks the first time a paints and coatings manufacturing facility in Việt Nam has earned this Gold-level certification.

LEED is a globally recognised system for evaluating the environmental performance and energy efficiency of buildings. It assesses structures worldwide based on rigorous criteria, including sustainable site development, efficient use of water, energy, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation.

Of the four LEED certification levels, the Gold rating achieved by AkzoNobel’s Bình Dương plant is second only to the highest Platinum level.

The achievement underscores AkzoNobel’s strong commitment to sustainability and its pioneering role in advancing green manufacturing within the paints and coatings industry. It also represents a concrete step towards the company’s global ambition to halve carbon emissions across its entire value chain by 2030, the company said.

Playing a strategic role in the ASEAN region, the Bình Dương plant incorporates advanced environmental technologies, including a modern wastewater treatment system that minimises environmental impact and an innovative process that recycles sludge into tiles. The facility also adheres to strict production and quality management protocols aimed at reducing environmental impact at every stage, from raw material intake and processing to final product packaging and delivery.

“The LEED Gold certification for our Bình Dương plant is not only recognition of our efforts to build state-of-the-art facilities, but also a powerful testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainability,” said Wijnand Bruinsma, director of Sustainability at AkzoNobel. — BIZHUB
