Tuna exports reached more than $75 million in the first month of 2026, a 13 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reported on Tuesday.
HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s tuna exports opened 2026 on a firm footing, topping US$75 million in January, up 13 per cent year on year, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers reported on Tuesday.
The early gains were driven by strong performances in several key markets. Shipments to Japan rose 95 per cent, Germany climbed 39 per cent and the Netherlands increased 15 per cent compared to the same period last year. Exports to smaller markets expanded rapidly from a low base, with Egypt up 129 per cent and Chile up 133 per cent.
The United States, however, bucked the trend. Exports to the US fell 6 per cent amid new tax policies and tighter import requirements.
VASEP said shipments to the US are expected to face continued challenges as exporters comply with regulations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act that took effect at the beginning of this year, alongside uncertainty over tariffs.
The association said recovery in the US market will depend largely on companies standardising supply chain documentation, reviewing HS and HTS codes and coordinating closely with importers to meet certificate of admissibility requirements under the act when required. Should tariffs or inspection measures increase, US importers may adjust product categories, press for lower prices or extend negotiations, making orders less favourable for Vietnamese exporters.
In the European Union, VASEP said the upward trend could be sustained if businesses expand value-added and canned tuna lines while meeting increasingly stringent sustainability and traceability standards.
Exports to the Middle East and North Africa also hold significant potential, supported by rising demand for canned and convenience products. However, companies will need to manage payment risks and logistics volatility to maintain momentum.
VASEP expects tuna exports to continue growing in the coming months, though at a modest pace. — BIZHUB/VNS
