What is the significance of the Joint Statement on a US-Việt Nam Framework for an Agreement on Reciprocal, Fair and Balanced Trade in strengthening bilateral economic relations?
The Joint Statement on a US-Việt Nam Framework for an Agreement on Reciprocal, Fair and Balanced Trade is a strategic turning point. This statement establishes an important legal framework that ensures fairness in the economic partnership between Việt Nam and the US, moving towards a long-term, mutually beneficial cooperation framework in line with the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations. This creates stability, trust and predictability for businesses and investors from both countries in their investment and business activities.
The statement also highlights that, rather than just regular trade exchanges, the two countries can cooperate to resolve core issues such as market transparency, intellectual property protection and promoting sustainable development. This lays the foundation for expanding cooperation into new areas of mutual interest such as high technology, energy and the digital economy.
The Joint Statement on a US-Việt Nam Framework for an Agreement on Reciprocal, Fair and Balanced Trade will help elevate the economic and trade relationship to a strategic level and build the trust necessary for a comprehensive trade agreement between Việt Nam and the US in the future.
According to the Joint Statement, the US will maintain the reciprocal tariff rate of 20 per cent for goods originating from Việt Nam, as stipulated in Executive Order 14257, dated April 2 this year, and subsequent amendments.
